The Death of Vanity Metrics: What Really Matters Going into 2026

If your Instagram post gets 10,000 likes but no sales… did it really work?

It’s the uncomfortable question every marketer needs to ask this year. For too long, marketers and business stakeholders have chased metrics that look good in screenshots but don’t move the needle. In 2025, it’s time to retire the obsession with likes, followers, and views and focus on what actually drives business growth in 2026.

Welcome to Kickstart Your Week, where we cut through the noise and talk about what really matters in marketing every Monday morning!

Don’t get us wrong! “Vanity metrics” are important, but with context!

Does a post get great engagement but no conversions? You need to dig into your CTAs and customer journey.

Does a post get zero engagement? You need to dig into what will resonate with your audience, or if you’re posting on the right channels.

Why Vanity Metrics Took Over

Social media made it easy to fall in love with the numbers that feel like success. Platforms rewarded visibility: more likes, more followers, more views, and brands took the bait. For a while, it worked. A high follower count meant credibility. Engagement looked like traction.

But as any business owner eventually learns, engagement doesn’t always equal conversion. A viral post doesn’t guarantee sales. And even a comment section full of fire emojis won’t fix a broken funnel.

The Problem with Vanity Metrics

Vanity metrics are seductive because they’re simple and public. They make us look good on paper, but they don’t always translate to profit.

Here’s why they fall short:

  • They’re easy to fake. Buying followers, bots, or inflated reach was once a common practice. While that doesn’t happen as often, some practices are still around—just sneakier.

  • They don’t tie back to ROI. 10,000 likes mean nothing if no one buys, subscribes, or fills out a form.

  • They mislead decision-makers. Leadership teams see “great engagement” and assume campaigns are working even when sales data says otherwise.

We’ve all seen it: a viral TikTok with millions of views and zero sales lift. That’s not marketing success—that’s entertainment, which is fine, if that’s goal.

Vanity Metrics

What Really Matters Going into 2026

The brands that win this year are the ones aligning their reporting with business outcomes, not social optics.

Here are the metrics that actually matter:

  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): How much it costs to bring in a paying customer.

  • Customer Lifetime Value (LTV): How much a customer is worth over time—and how often they come back.

  • Conversion Rate: From ad to lead to sale, how many people are taking the next step?

  • Retention & Churn: Are customers sticking around, or are they bouncing after the first promo?

  • Owned Channel Engagement: Email open rates, click-throughs, and repeat purchases—metrics you control.

In short: Quality over quantity. A smaller, engaged audience that converts is far more valuable than a massive, passive one.

Quick Wins to Shift Your Focus

Ready to stop chasing empty numbers? Here’s where to start:

Audit your reports. Replace “likes” and “views” with leads, conversions, and retention.

Build dashboards that matter. Track what ties directly to revenue.

Educate your team or clients. Help them understand why “200 new subscribers” beats “200k views.”

Tie every campaign to a business outcome. If you can’t explain how a metric impacts sales or retention, it’s probably not worth tracking.

The shift isn’t about ignoring engagement; it’s about connecting it to results.

The Bottom Line

Likes don’t pay the bills—conversions do.

The marketers who win in 2026 will be the ones who stop chasing vanity metrics and start measuring what actually matters.

So here’s your challenge: pick one vanity metric you’ve been obsessed with and swap it for a number that impacts your bottom line.

Then, keep that new metric front and center every Monday when you kickstart your week!
